Who Are Warren's Bakery?

Warren’s Bakery is a historic Cornish bakery brand with roots stretching back over 150 years, known for its traditional pasties and baked goods. With more than 40 stores across Cornwall and beyond, the business is expanding across the UK while staying true to its heritage.

At their flagship sites in Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, Warren’s blends everyday convenience with a focus on quality, aiming to deliver great coffee and food to staff, patients, and visitors alike. Derriford Hospital is one of the largest acute hospitals in the South West, serving as a major trauma centre and specialist hub for Devon and Cornwall.

Inside the hospital, Warren’s Bakery operates several sites, including a 24-hour café on Level 6 and a sit-down area on Level 3, serving staff, patients, and visitors.

As part of the Warrens Brewed Better project, these outlets have been upgraded to deliver faster service, consistent quality, and a much-improved coffee experience.

The Challenge

When Warren’s Bakery approached us about their Derriford Hospital sites, they were struggling with serious equipment issues that were undermining both service and quality. Their setup included a mix of traditional espresso machines and bean-to-cup models, but none could handle the sheer scale of demand. Frequent breakdowns, slow workflow, and inconsistent drinks frustrated staff and left customers with a slow and low quality experience.

With thousands of coffees being served every day and a large team to manage, Warren’s needed more than just replacement machines, they needed a robust, high-volume solution that could deliver speed, consistency, and reliability for their team.

The Solutions

To overcome these challenges, we worked with Warren’s Bakery to design a system tailored to Derriford’s unique demands. Across the estate, we designed three separate equipment solutions tailored for each of their sites: A 24/7 high volume bakery, a slow barista crafted café, and a consistent self service offering.

 

High Volume Automation

At the 24/7 high-volume café on Level 6, we installed Eversys Enigma E4 super-automatic machines supported by separate hot water boilers, filter brewers, and hot chocolate systems: a setup built to maximise speed, consistency, and reliability.

Barista-Quality Service

Meanwhile, on Level 3, we created a calmer, barista-led experience with a new traditional espresso machine and on-demand grinder.

An affordable package was put together utilising the Sanremo D8, Mahlkonig E65S GBW, and PUQpress M3, providing the staff the perfect level of automation for a high quality, calm coffee experience.

All Day Self Service Outlet

To support the Level 7 Goodness at Greens food hall, we installed three Schaerer Coffee Soul SCS machines: high-capacity self-service machines that deliver barista-quality coffee at the press of a button, allowing staff, patients, and visitors can enjoy great coffee quickly and easily throughout the day.

The Result?

The changes at Derriford have been transformational. With the new setup in place, Warren’s can now serve thousands of coffees a day with speed, consistency, and reliability. The equipment takes the pressure off staff, service flows smoothly across every outlet, and customers enjoy the same high-quality coffee no matter where they order.

Hospital coffee doesn’t always have the best reputation, but here at Derriford, Warren’s are proving it can be something people genuinely look forward to. When you’re on a long shift, visiting family, or just in need of a pick-me-up, that one good cup really can go a long way. At Warren's Derriford, it’s now delivered every single time.
